All election voting is conducted at Luna Pier Fire Hall, 4268 Luna Pier Road, from 7:00 am to 8:00 pm.

Public Accuracy Test for May 5, 2026 Special Election

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the Public Accuracy Test for the May 5, 2026 Special Election has been scheduled for Tuesday, April 7, 2026 at 9:00 a.m. at Luna Pier City Hall, 4357 Buckeye St., Luna Pier, Michigan.

The Public Accuracy Test is conducted to demonstrate that the program and computer that will be used to tabulate the results of the election, counts the votes in the manner prescribed by law.

City Hall Open - Saturday, May 2, 2026

The City of Luna Pier City Hall is open on Saturday, May 2nd, from 7:00 am to 3:00 pm.

Residents may come in to register to vote (bring ID and utility bill), or to receive an absentee ballot (bring ID).

Notice of Registration for the May Special Election

PLEASE TAKE NOTICE that any qualified elector who is not already registered, may register to vote at the office of the City Clerk; the office of the County Clerk; a Secretary of State branch office, or other designated State agency. Registration forms can be obtained at mi.gov/vote and mailed to the City Clerk. Voters who are already registered may update their registration at www.expressSOS.com.

The last day to register in any manner other than in-person with the local clerk is Monday, April 20, 2026.

 After this date, anyone who qualifies as an elector may register to vote in person with proof of residency (MCL 168.497) at the below Clerk’s office at the listed times or on Election Day, Tuesday, May 5, 2026 from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Candidates for Mayor & Council Member

Elections for the positions of Mayor and 3 Council Members will take place in 2026, with these positions taking office on January 1, 2027.

All interested, and eligible, residents can pick up a candidate packet at City Hall, 4357 Buckeye Street, Luna Pier, MI 48157.

DEADLINE – Tuesday, April 21, 2026, 4:00 PM – Candidates nominating petitions (or $100.00 fee) and Affidavits of Identity are due.

Petitions are to be signed by no less than twenty-five (25) and not more than fifty (50) Registered Electors of the City of Luna Pier.

Eligibility Criteria Per Charter

ELIGIBILITY FOR ELECTIVE OFFICE:
Section 4.4 No person shall hold any elective office of the City unless he has been a resident of the City for at least one (1) year immediately prior to the last day for filing original petitions for such office and shall appear on the assessment roll of the City as an owner of property subject to taxation by the City for a period of not less than one (1) year immediately prior to the last day for filing original petitions for such office. No person shall be eligible for appointment to fill a vacancy in an elective office unless such qualifications are held at least one (1) year immediately prior to the time of appointment. No person shall hold any elective office unless he is a qualified and registered elector of the City on the last day for filing, or at such time of appointment and throughout the tenure of office.

No person shall be eligible for any elective office who is in default to the City. The holding of office by any person who is in such default shall create
a vacancy unless such default shall be eliminated within thirty (30) days after written notice thereof by the Council, or unless such person shall in good faith be contesting the liability for such default.

Each candidate for elective office shall file with his petition his affidavit that he possesses qualifications for such office provided for in this Section. Failure to file such affidavit shall invalidate the petition.

No incumbent elective City officer shall become a candidate for any elective City office except to succeed himself without first resigning from his then incumbent elective city office. Provided, that the provisions hereof shall not apply to any incumbent City officer whose term of office will expire with the
election at which he is to be a candidate for another elective City office.

What is an absentee ballot?

An absentee ballot is for people who are registered to vote but are unable to attend the polls on election day.

Election News (Check Back Often)

The Presidential General Election was held Tuesday, November 5, 2024 at the Luna Pier Fire Hall.  The poll was opened from 7:00 AM until 8:00 PM of the same Election Day.  To comply with the Help American Vote Act (HAVA), voting instructions were available on audio tap and in Braille.  Arrangements for obtaining the instructions in these alternative formats can be made by contacting the City Clerk in advance of the election.  All polling locations are accessible for voters with disabilities.

You may register to vote at City Hall during regular business hours or at your local Secretary of State branch office. We also have registration forms on our website that may be printed out at home along with a registration link to the State of Michigan so that you can check your own registration status if you wish. The link is located on the left hand side under Clerk links.  

With the passing of Proposal 18-3 in November 2018 all eligible and registered voters in Michigan may now request an absent voter ballot without providing a reason. Simply call the City before an election and request one and it will be sent to you.  Also if anyone would like.to be added to the city’s permanent absentee voter list please call me and you will receive an absentee voter application automatically for every election. When a registered voter comes to the polls please bring a photo ID.  Here are the acceptable forms of identification: 

  • Michigan driver’s license or state-issued ID card
  • Driver’s license or personal identification card issued by another state

  • Federal or state government-issued photo identification

  • U.S. passport

  • Military ID with photo

  • Student identification with photo from higher school or accredited institution or higher learning

  • Tribal identification card with photo
